Alevel Media Preliminary task

The Task

We were given the task to produce a real music video, with a duration of 60-70 seconds long. Choosing 'What time is it?' from High School Musical, we all had to act, film and edit the re-creation and upload the video and our findings on to our blogs.

Planning

As I was absent, I had to understand the planning that my classmates had done in order to focus on my parts during the filming. This led to me being extra weary when listening to the person behind the camera as I was fairly new to the production.

However, despite this, I can say that careful and fairly detailed planning is essential to carry out the filming as the kick-starts a productive session for filming the scenes.

Filming

During the filming, we all took part in using the camera, and used the whole classroom to give us much wider angles to film each scene. As everyone acted in the music video, my role was to fill in as most of the background characters, ensuring that the colourful scene in the movie was replicated in our music video. Choosing props similar to those in the film (the clothes, the chalk board and the clock etc), we were hoping to make it as similar as possible so that we can give off the same musical-esc effect like the real movie did.

When filming, I learned that cooperation and listening is key because if actors/actresses are unsure on what they're role in the film is, the video will begin to look unproffessional. Patience is also an important factor when filming because it can be neccesary to do re-takes to ensure that the final prelim video is at a good standard.

Editing

We each had to edit the video using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 (2015) to give us an insight on the techniques of editing - different cuts, sound, trimming clips etc- and we had to make it around 60-70 seconds long

I found that editing can be tricky at the start, but once you're able to know what each tool can be used for, the only focus is making sure that you time your clips to the sounds and in our case, align our video to that of the original.

Final Product

After completing the planning, filming and editing, I had to export the file from Adobe and create an MP4. From here, I uploaded the final video onto my school Youtube account where it can be seen by the public (but most importantly the examiner) with ease.

During this stage of my music video preliminary, I have understood the general process of publishing the video and uploading it onto Youtube. I am also aware that on Youtube, making money is possible through Ad-sense (just like Blogger) so platforms such as Youtube is able to generate revenue both for the production company and the artist.

Evaluation

During this preliminary, it is evident that a lot of time and focus goes into preparing, planning and executing a final product in the form of a video. It definitely gave me insight in what goes on behind the scenes of a music video. A problem which occurred was the exporting of the file as the first 30 seconds were cut off and so I had to rectify this by re-exporting the file and re-uploading it back on to Youtube.

For the finished project itself, I believe the video is at a fairly high standard, considering we has limited props, limited actors/actresses (particularly since we aren't actors ourselves) and little time to perform. That being said the editing could be a little closer to detail so I will ensure that during my official music video will be heavily focused on quality editing.
